More than 23 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes, yet nearly a quarter of those individuals remain undiagnosed. If it is left unchecked, diabetes can lead to devastating results including blindness, kidney disease, and nerve damage in addition to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. But, those with diabetes can take control of the disease and live full, happy lives.

Atlantic General's Diabetes Outpatient Education program can provide the proper tools to do so. Ours is a comprehensive program of group and individual educational sessions for people with diabetes and their families. Our program has received the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for quality self management education. In addition to individualized, custom diabetes management plans and detailed personal goals, the program provides information about:

  • Glucose self-monitoring
  • Meal planning
  • Exercise
  • Diabetes medicine
  • Acute complications including high and low blood sugars
  • Chronic complications such as eye, kidney, nerve and cardiovascular disorders
  • Emotional considerations – coping and problem-solving strategies
  • Foot care
  • Guidelines for medical check-ups

The program is facilitated and taught by two certified diabetes educators. For more information about the services offered through this program or how to obtain the necessary referral from your physician, please contact the Diabetes Outpatient Education Program at 410-641-9703.
