With a recent gift of $20,000 to Atlantic General Hospital came the words, “Use it wisely and good luck with your endeavors,” written in the hand of Jean Bellet Green, president of the Foundation for Cardiovascular Research.

The foundation was created in 1945 by Green’s first husband, world-renowned cardiologist, author and teacher Samuel Bellet, after he discovered and patented the drug Quinaglute.

Quinaglute, still in use today, is a treatment for life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Bellet channeled the collected royalties from the patent into the fund, making possible more than $2.7 million in charitable gifts during the next sixty years.

Among the many other recipients are the University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Bellet was a professor; the Hospice of Palm Beach, Fla.; and the Rehabilitation Society for Children.

The generous $20,000 donation to Atlantic General Hospital is the final allocation from the Foundation for Cardiovascular Research. The funds, at the request of Green, and her daughter Joan Bellet Roache, who teaches nutrition at the Chiropractic Center in Ocean Pines and holds yoga classes at Gold’s Gym in Ocean City, will be used as the seed money to develop the Atlantic General Hospital Integrative Health Associates Wellness Program.

The program will give hospital employees access to an exercise center, massage, and classes on nutrition, stress management, yoga, tai chi, and meditation. The program will ultimately be expanded to serve the community as well.
