Atlantic General Hospital's surgical services department provides a full range of ophthalmology services including cataract surgery, the latest in lens replacement technology, and glaucoma treatment. All surgical services are provided through the opthalmologists of Chesapeake Eye Center.
Canaloplasty
Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, is most commonly caused by increased pressure in the eye resulting from improper drainage of fluid from the eyeball. Those with the disease first experience a loss of peripheral vision and, if left untreated, eventual loss of all eyesight as pressure is placed on the optic nerve. Certain medications and surgical proceedures are available to control the pressure within the eyeball.
Canaloplasty is a new alternative to traditional glaucoma surgery with less risk and a quicker recovery time.
Dr. Jason Yonker, of Chesapeake Eye Center, is currently offering canaloplasty to patients who are good candidates for the procedure.
