Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Hysterectomies are performed for many reasons – fibroids (noncancerous
growths),
heavy periods, endometriosis, pelvic support problems/prolapse, and uterine or cervical
cancers. Depending upon your reason for considering a hysterectomy, there
are much less invasive alternatives to open abdominal surgery.
One is laparoscopic hysterectomy, during which a thin, lighted instrument
called a laparoscope, along with small surgical instruments, are inserted
into the abdomen through three or four incisions each less than a quarter
of an inch long to remove the uterus. The benefits of such a procedure
are shorter recovery, less pain and blood loss, and reduced scarring when
compared with other methods.
