As daily life takes on a faster pace, the potential for stress is also increasing. Over time, chronic stress leads not only to emotional and mental strain, but to serious physical ailments as well. Just in time for the holiday season, which can be as overwhelming as it is enjoyable, Atlantic General Hospital is offering the community a new stress management class.
In a four-session class titled “Stress Buster Hypnosis,” Karen Shipman, LCSW-C, clinical director of Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services, will teach participants hypnosis techniques that can be used to reduce stress and produce a calm from within.
The American Academy of Clinical Hypnosis defines hypnosis as a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention. During the class, Shipman will explain the concepts and misconceptions of guided imagery, deep breathing, and deep relaxation and hypnosis and lead attendees through these techniques.
The one-hour sessions will be held at Atlantic General Hospital each Thursday at 6:45 p.m., from November 30 through December 21, 2006. The fee is $8 per class for drop ins, or $20 for the series. For more information, call Karen Shipman at 410-641-4598.
