Despite conflicting weather forecasts of rain and chilly temps and sun with high winds, hundreds of Penguins and spectators turned out for the 14th Annual Penguin Swim on New Year’s Day.
With sun and temperatures in the 50s, event organizers really could not have asked for better weather – or better participation. The swim raised more than $67,000 for Atlantic General Hospital’s Foundation. While final expenses have not yet been tallied, this is the largest amount ever raised during the annual event.
“Our goal was to raise $49,500 after promotion and planning expenses,” said one organizer, “but thanks to the dedicated swimmers from the Bull on the Beach team and everyone who turned out for the event, our initial estimates show we were able to exceed that goal by more than $5,000.”
Those teams and individuals who played the largest parts in the Swim’s success were recognized with first-, second- and third-place prizes:
Individual Winners:
First Place: “Woody” Butch German $2,575
Second Place: Georgia Speier $725
Third Place: Carrie Hall $600
Team Winners:
First Place: Bull on the Beach $32,500
Second Place: AGH Frostys $6,840
Third Place Ocean City Parrotheads $5,460
Special recognition was also given to the oldest and youngest swimmers.
Youngest Swimmer:
Lucy Ann Kaufhold 2 months, 25 days
Oldest Swimmers:
Paul (69) and Lorayn Whitson (68)
