Genetic Screening for Cancer Prevention

AGH now offers a Cancer Prevention Program, providing cancer risk assessment for all patients receiving a mammogram. By evaluating personal and family history of cancer, this screening program helps determine if women are at increased risk for certain cancers that can run in families. This can be caused by a genetic mutation being passed down from one generation to the next. Learning about your risk through genetic testing can be life-saving; the more you know, the better prepared you are to take actions that can help reduce your cancer risk!

Step 1: Take The Quiz To See If You Qualify

If you have a family history of cancer, genetic testing is the only way to determine if you are at high risk. If you have personally had cancer, you may still be at risk for additional cancers and may benefit from genetic testing as well. Genetic testing can help you and your provider make informed healthcare decisions and develop plans to manage any increased risk.

Step 2: Talk to a Certified Genetic Counselor to see if testing is right for you

All AGH mammography patients can schedule an appointment at our clinic to speak with a certified genetic counselor via telemedicine to receive education about genetics and their personal risk factors, as well as ask questions. There is no charge for this call. If you would like to proceed with genetic testing after the call, you will have the opportunity to provide a saliva sample to send to the lab.

Genetic testing is very well covered by insurance; in fact, over 95% of AGH patients pay $0 for the test. All patients who pursue testing will be notified directly within a few days about their coverage, and low-cost options are available for patients who need it.
